Hi all,

I use DW MX to code my web pages. I've just got a client who has a frontpage enabled site. All of their directories have _vti_cnf folders in them which appear to contain information such as 'last updated, last cached, etc.' in them - there's one HTML file for each file in the parent directory.

My question is, do I need these? Or, more importantly, if I'm making adjustments to pages in the parent directory, how do I make adjustments to the _vti_cnf files as well? Do I need to? What are the consequences if I don't?!

If I create new folders, do I need to create a new _vti_cnf folder for each one?

As you can tell, I feel hopelessly out of my depth, and I hope someone can help me! I'm worried about crashing my clients site, which generally does not lead to repeat business ...!

Thanks in advance,

david

My question is, do I need these?

Yes. If the client is publishing through FP, those vti files are required as they contain historical data needed to verify and maintain the publishing logs.

Or, more importantly, if I'm making adjustments to pages in the parent directory, how do I make adjustments to the _vti_cnf files as well? Do I need to?

You don't make adjustments to the vti files, that is done through FP's publishing routine.

Two ways to go about this. Move into an FP environment for development and ongoing maintenance. Or, move the client over to Macromedia Contribute and then both of you can work in your preferred editing environment.

What are the consequences if I don't?!

The entire FP publishing routine will be negated.

thanks for the response ...

One more question - if I create a new directory, one that the client is not writing to, or using at all, is it okay to just not use these extensions at all?

Thanks again.

Is it okay to just not use these extensions at all?

They are more or less stored data files that interact with the FP publishing routine. If your pages do not use features that require FP extensions, then you don't need them.

If you are creating a new directory, there won't be any need for the vti folders if you are not Publishing through FP or utilizing any of the FP features that require extensions.

vti = Vermeer Technologies, Inc.

They are the company that originally developed FrontPage.

On a side note, do not delete any of those vti files and/or folders. If the clients site makes use of any of these features...

  • Categories Component
  • Confirmation Field
  • Database Results Wizard
  • Discussion Form Handler
  • FrontPage Created Server-Side Image Maps
  • Hit Counter
  • Lightweight Source Control (Document Check-In/Check-Out Without VSS)
  • Nested Sub Webs
  • Registration Form Handler
  • Save Results Form Handler
  • Search Form
  • Send to Database Form Handler
  • StyleSheet Links to Multiple Files or ASP Files
  • Webbot Confirmation Field Component
  • Webbot Discussion Component
  • Webbot HTML Markup Component
  • Webbot Include Component
  • Webbot Registration Component
  • Webbot Save Results Component
  • Webbot Scheduled Image
  • Webbot Scheduled Include Component
  • Webbot Search Component
  • Webbot Substitution Component

...those features may no longer function without the vti files.

If you are utilizing the clients existing site design and making use of their FP includes, included navigation, forms, etc... those files need to stay put. Any new ones that are created in your directory will also need to stay put.
