IIS problems (files not opening)

I just installed IIS on my win2k machine. I started the service and created an asp file...

when I open a browser and enter the path(http://localhost***) the file wont open.
I get an HTTP 500 - Internal server error

Any ideas why this is happening?

Switch off show friendly http error message and then let us know what error you are actually getting.

I think I didn't config. my DNS properly so I'll give that a try. If I dont succeed I might need more help

well.. it says BAD URL.

my file is in the wwwroot directory in the MyWeb folder and it's called example.asp
When I type in h*tp://localhost/MyWeb/examples.asp I get the above error.

I dont understand it. It supposed to be the correct URL.

Have you set up the default website properties in IIS to point the default directory to

wwwroot/MyWeb

I think I did... I remember checking the dir.
let me confirm once I get home.

It would be really messed up if all this time I hadn't set it up to point to wwwroot.

I found that the best way to resolve it is to uninstall IIS and reinstall it. BE SURE TO RESTART YOUR MACHINE AFTER INSTALLAION.

After you do that just type [localhost...] in the URL and hopefully it should work.

One thing to watch for when your installing it is the make sure the checkbox for IIS is not gray. If it is then click on it and go to details for everything in IIS and click it. Gray means that you are not installing the full version.

well, I have it mapped to wwwroot... I'm out of ideas.

How can I uninstall and reinstall it from my machine. When I try through the components I can't do it because it is a default application after an installation.

yes.. it doesnt matter if I do 127.0..... or localhost I get the BAD URL error.
Maybe I should try reinstalling it. The problem is I dont know how to do it.

In XP you use add remove windows components on the add remove programs window. I can't remember if that where it is on win2k.

The default web is running...

I had coldfusion on the machine, I uninstalled it and that helped for about 5 minutes. Then I got the error again.

Can it be the port settings?

i know nothing about coldfusion but it seems tome that it is a webserver and in your case causing conflicts

time for a windows reinstallation fresh and clean?

I did that twice and it didn' t help. The odd thing is that I just did a fresh w2k instal... just about 2 weeks ago.

I'm still leaning towards CF. and the port settings.

I think I will give up on it for the holidays!

Ok I have the solution for you if you havent already got it... this will work 100%, sounds weird but trust me.. Go into you control panel>>Internet options, then click on your "connection tab" then into Lan Settings. With in here unclick "Auto Detect settings" Voila. It will now work.. Bizzare, I know but it works! Good luck!
