Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it's possible to install Windows 2000 Server edition over an existing Windows 2000 Pro without having to reinstall and reconfigure the other currently installed software like IIS, mailserver, firewall, etc.

I tried to simply run setup, but it just flat out informed me it's not possible to upgrade W2K pro...

Thanks!

Sorry not possible

Either reformat and clean-install or install it on a second partition (ie not the one windows pro is now on)

It is possilbe ot upgrade
NT server to 2OOO server
NT server to 2OO3 server
2OOO server to 2OO3 server
(all belong to MS servers family)

certain limitations apply but i would always go ffor
a fresh install

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Problem is, I host a couple of small sites which are slowly picking up traffic causing the 10 connection limit to be a problem, and reinstalling the whole thing would take these sites offline for too long, I think. Even assuming nothing goes wrong...

Heh...a very unreliable one...

Meh. Guess I'll have to go for the complete install...

disconnect old hd
install server on new one
things go bad- disconnect new and reconnect old one

its always good idea to have a spare hd. they fail more than any ther part imo

That's probably the best option. Put a new HD in my work-PC, install W2K Server and all the rest, and then put it into the webserver...

Thanks, why didn't I think of that?

unless you have same hardware on both work-pc and server,
you may run into problems

Well, never mind, the problem resolved itself. The HD died on me, so i have to re-install anyway... :(
