If Micosoft does buy Google, what changes?

Netscape v Internet Explorer Analogy

It would be impossible to improve on Google's Relevancy

But it seems possible that new esteric "extras" would be added that would take search engines into the next dimension

Would .NET programming be added that would combine a UDDI and SERPs into one hybrid of SEARCH and WEB SERVICES DIRECTORY

Would The INVIBLE Web be combined with SERPs

Would it be an analogy to look at the advancements made by the Netscape Browser to I.E. as a harbinger of things to come?

I really don't see MS going down that road. They are dodging anti-trust and incorporating internet search would not be a real good idea. I think you are going to see MSN and Microsoft seperate more. If google were purchased I would think it would be under the MSN division. I highly doubt though we will see that anytime soon, if at all.

edit: Welcome to WebmasterWorld, USA1!
According to the Wall Street Journal last week, the two at least have been talking. Anti-trust only comes up when two public companies want to join hands, not when MS wants to buy a private company like G. MS does not have to ask the teacher for permission to use the bathroom, now does it?

As far as what changes if this happens? Who knows. As a previous stockholder of MS for many years, that never ceased to amaze me what their next move would be. But just for appearances, here's my short list of changes:
1) G gets a new directory where editors DO get paid and get the job done, instead of waiting for months or years to get listed.
2) MS /MSN gets a powerful recurring cash flow mechanism (adwords) outside of their current business model. Kind of makes CENTS to me, especially with looksmart not being extended past January or February!
3) MS gets the undisputed search leader.
4) MS can compete with Y and O, or as I am coining it here: YO - for Yahoo! and Overture.

My two cents, WFN:)

That's not true. It has nothing to do with whether companies are private or public. They can both be public, both private, or one public and one private. Yes, large companies must ask the teacher for permission when they go into deals where they will control the majority of the marketshare in something or by joining forces could box out competition.

Anti-trust laws deal with protecting trade and commerce from unfair business practices and monopolies which limit free competition in the marketplace.

BlueSky, if, and only if, MS does buy G, it still would not be a monopoly, hence my statement. Regulatory approval for a public company is standard issue if they are buying someone else - I understand that.

I stand corrected in regards to the public/private, you are right about the fair trade.

BUT it is true in what I was referring to is if the two companies together would not have a monopoly, because they would not.

All this is hypothetical anyway. Sorry BlueSky, my mistake on the public/private.

Yeh but MSGuy would arrive! ;)

Do you think MS would keep the Google brand?

It's unarguably very strong - but as strong as MS?

And Im pretty sure the move would give MS a monopoly of the search market. I reckon it could be argued that IE defaulting to MSN.com gives them a fair share of the market - then add what Google has...

If Google does go public - could it conceivably reach a point where it could be subjected to a hostile takeover some time in the future?

What safeguards, if any, must Google put into place?
