A Google Patent application newly published on the United States Patent & Trademark Office website this morning appears to furnish extensive details on Google’s plans for enhanced local searches via mobile devices.

Fittingly enough, the Patent app is entitled, Local Search and Mapping for Mobile Devices.

I agree - whether or not it's granted is another matter. Google don't really need it, they have sufficient brand strength

As for the patent, there's an extract in jpeg format in the article linked to with the relevant numbers. The US Patent Office website is fully searchable. It looks like it was published yesterday morning, so should be retrievable if you want to read the full copy.
