i just was hired to maintain a website. From reading and info I know links are very important to a site. We currently have no links and my boss isn't crazy about linking to other sites unless it is benefitting us. Can some tell me how to best approach this situation.

hi there welcome to WebmasterWorld kosar

(its quite simple you need incoming links in order to be found in the google serps - without this he is relying on advertising only)

tell him his choices are

1) set aside an advertising budget for adwords

and/or

2) get incoming links.

if he chooses 1 then read google adwords [webmasterworld.com] and elsewhere on the board for other search engines.

if 2 then pay to be in directories such as yahoo, pay for advertising text links on other sites and just email sites asking for links (unfortunately you won't get many takers unless you provide a link back)

Hi Kosar and welcome.
I was in the same predicament. Maybe try explain to your boss how PR works and the importance of links to benefit your exposure on the net. Explain to him that if done properly linking can drive extremely targetted traffic to your site increasing ROI where your investment has been time and no money at all.

If this does not work then I have plenty of links to brilliant threads that explain the benefit of links:

Hope that helps:-)
