Page rank 7 with no links page?

I was working on my link campaign today and noticed one site I've been trying to exchange links with that has a page rank of 7 and no links page! Is it possible to get that high of a ranking? Could it be that people are linking to them (inbound links?) and they are not linking to any other sites? (outbound links?)

Thanks!

Sure it's possible, Palmpal. It could be that their content is compelling enough that other sites link to them with no expectation of a return link. They could be orchestrating an inbound link campaign from other sites they control, or they could be buying links, but often the simplest explanation is correct: they got inbound links because of quality.

You can check their backlinks to see who's linking to them to settle the issue.

Thanks, I looked at the backlinks and noticed over 23,000 links. Then I discovered the majority of the links were from other pages on their site. They offer a searchable database of their informational product.

That leads me to my next question. When I check the backward links to my own site I only have five. All of my products are located on static pages and previously my backward links included these static pages (about 50.) Is Google still working to get the backlinks added?

Thanks!

I'm not sure that Google is working to add more backlinks. But Googleguy hinted that Google has got better at counting backlinks, so they may never again appear as they did before. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

palmpal,

If the PR of your entire site went down (many did recently) many of your internal links may have fallen below the threshold at which Google reports them. They still count, but no longer show.

Reading further down in this forum I found information about looking for backlinks using Alltheweb. I found all the links to my site and also all the static pages as well.

I also read that I should be using the page rank on the page my link would show up on and not necessarily the Index page. Is this correct? I'm listed on a PR6 site (Index page) but the Links page that my URL is on is PR0! They have their links pages categorized in alpha order with multiple pages. The further the pages go the lower the rank! My website is listed under "S" and thus the page rank is zero.

Thanks again!

palmpal. just remember too that PR is by page not site. I guess you are talking about PR7 being the PR of the index page? In this case whether they have a separate link page has very minimal effect at all. We have a couple of PR7 sites and have no links page and recip link campaign. A links page is a fairly narrow way of getting interlinked, but maybe one of the few for totally commercial or coporate pages. If you put up up just a few useful information pages relating to your site and linking out to a few relevant external pages and let others know about it, im sure some people will link to you naturally from related, if not competitive sites.
