How we go about choosing who to link to at the present time? - ken_b
This great question came up in the discussion Pumping it up! Let's Regroup and Talk [webmasterworld.com] and we didn’t address it. Let’s see what you can come up with. I’ll start with 3…
1. Is actively involved with their site
2. Lets me know right up front what their linking policy is
3. Provides fresh and relevant content
Not to scam them but to develop them.
Sharing knowledge is very powerful.
When doing link exchanges for clients and have exhausted all the highly visible sites, known must have sites, authorities that exchange etc., the next step is:
Google... set search preference 100... type in the primary "informative" keyphrase... and go directly to page 10.
Preview these sites 10 at a time and if there is "something of interest", "content that supports/supplements the client's site", or "an alternate view" I note the site URL, email, and a name (if available).
Emailing links requests is a step process, that is:
First step - 1. develop interest first > don't mention link exchange.
Second step - 2. Respondences are more receptive to requests once they know you and a respond back means you caught their attention so... give some insight that will help them online.
Third step - 3. Request the link along with helping them appreciate what a quality link is.
Forth Step - 4. Continue the relationship, ask how things or going, improvements. This is the key... to your own improvements as a single link consistently improving is better than a thousand that don't.
The same philosophy is why WebmasterWorld is so successful... the lurkers add nothing to the process and get little in return (same as > lots of requests for inferior links).
Members participate gaining knowledge, skills and "wisdom" growing in quality each day they post, and a knowledgeable linking partnership means your efficiency doubles each time a new partnership is established.
<added> for those that are in the PR hunt > a PR0, 1, 2 can quickly be a PR4, 5, 6 in but a few updates, and much easier to develop than existing higher PR pages.</added>
