Do the small search engines count?

I am in a business where its almost impossible to get mutual links. Think estate agents...think ten times worse!
If I register with all of the small search engines does each one count as an incoming link so far as Google is concerned for PR.
Sorry if this has been answered a thousand times before.

So long as the link isn’t pulling from a database check out how the directory lists the sites then yes the link will help your PR with G. Also check whether the page your hoping to get a listing on has a PR

You might think directories instead of search engines. Most obvious is a listing in DMOZ which Google uses for its directory listings. Then find any professional association or other business directories to which you can submit the site. For example, a Google search for estate agent directory turns up quite a few possibilities.

You might have some luck if you use this as a starting point.

Surely even estate agents can get mutual links, just not from estate agents in the same district... ? Think out of the box - if you don't compete with each other's business then a mutual link is mutually beneficial.

We compete nationally. Dog eat dog. I've tried really hard to get links but always get the old heave ho. Its tough at the bottom.

I can understand your problem I have a similar site that’s been next to impossible to get links within the industry, so I've just gone for good PR links and it's help the site to a PR6 so it's not all doom & gloom

Check for the link displaying your URL (http://www.domain.com)when you mouse over not something like CGI-local/dir/search-cgi? and so on

I find a lot of sites in my industry have no understanding of the benefits of links and are also paranoid of linking to the competition.
I no longer worry about competition, links can be of more benefit most buyers do not even look at the links.
If they will not reciprocate then bin them and move on.

The best luck I have had with links is to phone the Owner and sell them the idea of linking - more benefit than lost business etc.

New homeowners need services. You can set up a simple directory by region, county or such and approach all sorts of businesses for links -- painters, contractors, movers, neighborhood services (banks, theatres, restaurants). The list goes on and on.
