Reciprocal Links

Should they be from the same genre?

Hello all webmasters,

When requesting reciprocal links, is it really that important to only request from sites that are simalar to yours? I have a site and i request from many different sites, not just the ones that are the same theme as mine. I am confused...i am trying to improve my ranking but i also want to build a lot of reciprocal links. i curently have a page rank of 5 on google. I just make sure that i link with sites that have high page ranks. Someone please help me.

The main thing is to get the linktext right. A site linking to you should use the keywords you want to be found for in the linktext.
Next important thing is to have links from sites which are deemed important. Google's measure is PR, but the other engines also put different weight to sites.

But, never underestimate the traffic a link can bring in itself. Often those links are more valuable than just the boost you get in the engines.

Those links are especially valuable when they come from the same area your site is operating in.

As to the value of getting links from the same genre, as you put it, for search engine ranking: I believe this is mostly a concept of the future.
But trying to go there today is certainly a good idea.
