On another note relating to recip links:
I came across a link exchange program which seems like great idea - automatically adding sites who agree to exchange to your link page. Reduces admin time and hundreds of equally willing sites to go shopping for links with.
Seems to good to be true - does anyone know anymore and what are the catches?
What are the dangers of effectively hosting your links page elsewhere - is it such a bad idea to have this in addition to my existing links page

Hmmm, so even willing sites that assess from the 'database of sites' who is appropriate to link to are a no-no?.
Herein lies the potential danger...
automatically adding sites who agree to exchange to your link page.
With the key word being automatically.
Automated link popularity building programs are considered a threat to the SE's as they can be used to artificially inflate a page's popularity, thereby undermining the relevance of their ranking algorithms.
So how does google decide you're up to no good? Because a link on your site points to one of these known 'farms?'
That's one way. Another is by hosting a specific page or script on your site that flags it as a participant in such a program.
