Removing Spammy Links

Hello all,

I read on a few blog posts that webmasters add a list of spammy links to their Google Webmaster tools and report sites that scrape their content and also block spammy backlinks.

Do we have to put the time and energy into doing so?

I read that If you receive more natural links than spammy links youd be fine and Google will notice that. So why bother?

I never do that and neither do any of my clients. We all rank fine.

Maybe there is a difference between spammy links and random low quality links that happen naturally. Everyone acquires them. The more popular the site the more low quality links a site will acquire, like barnacles on a boat. Spammy links, links controlled by the site publisher for the purpose of increasing rankings, tend to follow statistical patterns.

Thus, imo, it's fairly easy to differentiate between barnacle links and actual manipulative spam links. I know there are anecdotal reports of barnacle links sinking a site's rankings. But in the cases I reviewed there either a pre-existing actual spam problem or it was another issue affecting their ranking (Panda).

Personally, I would not recommend using the link removal tool. I don't believe it helps a site rank better. But it may help the search engines build a more accurate search engine by providing feedback that can be used to confirm the accuracy of their algorithms.
