With Penguin 3.0 (hopefully) around the corner, I want to do everything I can to make sure my site's link profile is clean and ready. Obviously, no one knows exactly what Penguin is going to be looking for so no site is completely safe, but I want to try to cover my bases as much possible.

A few months ago, I used LinkResearchTools to identify potentially problematic backlinks and then disavowed them. However, I've been told that LinkResearchTools is not worth what they charge and can only find a relatively small percentage of the backlinks out there.

Since it has been a few months since then, I want to try to run a sweep through my backlinks again and try to be as prepared as possible.

Does anyone continue to recommend LinkResearchTools? Are there other backlink scanners / evaluators that you recommend? Specifically, any services that identify risky/dangerous back links?

I would greatly appreciate your advice!

Thanks!

No backlink evaluator shows ALL your backlinks. Not even Google shows you that or ever has.

If you or a contractor have done link building then you may want to review the backlinks you have acquired and evaluate if they may be manipulative. But it's a controversial decision of whether to proactively begin removing those links, especially if you do not have a solid promotional strategy to keep your boat afloat. Something to consider is that you may end up removing links responsible for your rankings, so you'll end up losing positions. Manipulative links can be harmful to your ability to rank and are certainly worth considering for removal. But it's still a controversial move, so a thoughtful consideration is probably in order before deciding one way or another.
