Never done any of the above.

Yes, make a professional looking site with excellent, unique content. You'll find that sites will automatically link to you.
You could also provide something for other sites to use. Maybe make logo's for example. They use a logo that you've made, and you get a link back for your troubles.
Works for me, and on a side note, i've never been hit by an algo either. No Panda, Big Daddy, Florida etc.

Hi markdev,
It sounds that what you're doing is good, add to it what Lame Wolf suggested and you should be all set.
Don't forget that content is king, without good content Google will penalize you especially now after the new panda update.
Make sure the content in your site is 100% fresh and also the articles that you submit to article directories.
Cheers,

Article banks- Forget these, as all you are doing is feeding the article site and benefit them.
Press Release sites - Dont bother with these, unless you own a company making $50k upwards or have something unique. The benefits are so non-existent and Journalists DO NOT search News/Press Release banks looking for stories.
Forum Profiles are so devalued, its now pointless. You wont get a direct weblink out of this for certain! I dont think people buy from strangers who gave a bit of advice on some unknown forum.
I'd say you might attract hoards of silly kiddies begging for links though, but then the link quality isnt there, so its kind of a useless activity. Better off searching related websites instead.
Besides forum owners will make darn sure the profile pages give no value.
Other one-way link strategy? Ye, think of a viral idea and use that to promote your site.

My next link building project involves a statistician, a financial planner, and farm animals.

Isn't that redundant?

My best ranking pages are those that got online shortly after a new problem arose, i.e., not only viral but one of the first online.

Also know market-audience expectations for any site. If a niche is only good for 10,000/yr don't expect 1,000,000/yr. Plan accordingly. If good for 1 million/yr, build for 1 billion! Knowing market-audience, and ability to serve, will help determine how strong any link building activity/expense will be.
