Pinging for links?

In another post in the Links forum, a member mentioned pinging URL's through a pinging service site, and feeding his RSS (presumably with URL's from his blog or website) to Twitter.

As I understand it, pinging is to let other sites know about a page on your site or blog. How does pinging help with links, or does it?

I'd like to hear more about this also. Does anyone have any success stories using pinging services? Does it help you get natural backlinks?

I'd like to know more too please, I have just created my first blog,and have submitted it from the site build software that I created the blog with.Does this mean that I should ping the blog to have it found and to get backlinks.
