Hello Friends,

Till now I have learnt that social media sites are very good to generate back links. But normally the way we use social media site for the optimization purpose (just adding links to the site with anchor), I don't think that is going to help in search marketing process.

My question is what should be the exact way that a newbie like me can follow to get some search engine benefits from Social Media sites.

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Samit

My advice - get real links from real established sites, and don't waste your initial time chasing this social media B.S.

Can social media work? Sure.

Is it where I'd be spending my valuable time with a new site? Nope.

(I'm sure I'll be flogged by others here....;-)

There's no "exact way" - each site deserves a tailor made approach. Still..

1) Shortlist the social media sites where your link targets hang out.

2) Shortlist your link targets

3) Set a time limit for each site ( else it can become time sink )

4) Track your targets using RSS feeds, Yahoo Pipes, Advanced search, lists, etc

5) Engage first. Help their agenda first .Underplay your own pitching.

6) Review your social returns at least once a month.

Funny thing about social sites is that more you use for commercial reasons, more it will erode your influence.

Aim to build quality relationships via social media - links WILL follow.

Almost as social media sights utilize NoFollow attributes on links. Therefore you are not getting any "juice". While it obviously makes sense to put links on any and all social media assets you have because it is easy and free, I would not expect any return in a traditional SEO sense (in terms of keyword placement). Maybe you'll get some more traffic though!

I always consider social media sites, as a separate platform than search engine to get visitors and a platform to brand promotion.

But recently for one of my site - I found links ate social bookmarking sites, forum signature and forum profile page are showing as backlinks at yahoo site explorer.

social media sites play an important role in generating traffic but is helpful if site is do-follow. So don't focus on it.
