Hello,

I am currently in the process of finishing my personal website and I was thinking of buying or selling text links with other similar sites. The problem is that I have no idea where to begin! I understand a little about the industry but I don't want to link with the wrong sites. Can anyone help or give tips on how to link successfully?

thanks from a girl in need of some guidance :)

Hi Livie, welcome to WebmasterWorld.

There is lots of advice to absorb over this kind of thing. I would start with this forum's Library [webmasterworld.com], and also take a look over at the Google Forum [webmasterworld.com] for regular discussion of the potential problems with badly implemented link trading schames (amongst many other Google related issues, obviously).

personal website .... buying or selling text links

Hopefully the reading that shaddows has suggested will make you realise that that isn't a viable model for a personal site.

Er yes, sorry. Missed the bit about "personal".

FWIW link selling is a quick way to get your website dropped.
Link buying... well, whats the point for a personal site?

Link exchange- keep it on topic and you should be ok.

What type of site have you launched (for example, a blog or fanzine site), and what are you trying to acheive with it (keep in touch with friends, sell stuff, sell advertising space etc)?

I have made a blog and it's just so that I can write about my hobbies and my personal challenges. I am interested in exchanging links just so I can boost the traffic and get more people visiting and looking at what I have written. Maybe in the future I would consider selling links to try and earn some money.

Ok, yes. The links I posted are the best to start. If you read through the library, you will find lots of ways of obtaining free links.

Linking is the lifeblood of the internet. Once you start getting them, your traffic will increase, and you will start rankig in the major search engines. Write good content and construct your pages well, and you might even start getting good traffic from the SEs.

The usual advice applies- writing good content that others will want to link to is the key to success.

When you want to monetise, you are likely better to publish Adsense or some other syndicated advertising, rather than selling links. As I said earlier, selling links tends to get your site banned.
