Links From Message Boards

...are they buried too deep for link text passage?

Curious about message board linking. Specifically the boards that look like this...

Goto page Previous 1, 2, 3 ... 120, 121, 122, 123 Next

I've checked some stuff out on page 121 for exact phrase match by searching in Google but they only come up by using quotation marks. Would links on these pages have any back link benefits?

May sound simple, but it's been bugging me.

A gray toolbar PR on pages older than 6 months is an indication that the page probably has little if any pagerank passing potential. I wouldn't expect much from a forum post so many levels deep.

So basically anything past page ten or so would be of no benefit either unless there are inbound links?

Because of the nature of a message board it seems pretty reasonable for a link's value to dissipate over time.

Whether a link value disappears with time depends on the forum and how good the discussions are. There have been recent discussions about people who noticed that forums are ranking well. I don't think that's anything new, just new to those who are noticing that phenomenom. Good forums have ranked well for a long time. It's how I found THIS forum seven years ago.

My suggestion is to rethink your link building and think in terms of building links for mindshare [webmasterworld.com]. Read the discussion I just linked to. Then reflect on the fact that the better the quality of your posts the higher the likelihood those posts will rank and reward you with traffic not just from the ranking but from the members of the that forum.
