A few years back when I was doing SEO, I used to just buy links from text-link-ads and it worked like a charm. I'm hearing I should actually stay away from such links these days...

absolutely; respond to questions on forums through content rich posts and routinely link forum members to reviews that specifically answer their questions. just remember to write a long post in response that segues into your link; some forums may allow this activity; some may not to deter spammers. if you do this across several well viewed forums you could build some targeted traffic to your site rather quickly.
