Some of our clients are big iconic companies with nice websites with nice page rank.
Their websites are all maintained by different web design companies.
So where do I direct my link requests?

If it were me I would email my account manager (prob speak to them first) and ask them to pass the request on to the relevant person, after all the web companies probably don't make the decisions, they will add something like this only if they are asked to by the client.

Have you tried to track down a link page on their sites? The page itself may contain the informatin you seek.
If you can't find the page, there may be no value in even asking. That's not always the case, of course.

It's tricky because big iconic companies have so many personnel and getting to the right person can be difficult. I will call the switchboard operator sometimes and ask for the group that manages the website. Then when I get into the group I will drill down for the webmaster or marketing person.

Some larger companies have warmed up to use link management software in order to trim personnel costs. In that case you should look for their link request form and directly submit to that. If you receive a confirmation mailer after using the form, politely reply to it as that many times will go right back to the person in charge of making linking decisions.

Some of these companies do have links pages, but unfortunately there is no request form.
I will try with our account manager - I can see this taking a long time and a lot of phone calls.
I might also try contacting the web design companies and asking if they know who I should contact in the big company.

i have never used this technique to build links, but i do receive a response from the writer; maybe you could have them link to you on their next story by showing them a new app you launched or some photoshopped images of the 1st vacation photos from families that flew to the moon on virgin galactic.

- i promote one of their stories to the front page of a social media site like digg; enterprise sites are promoted with fewer votes than newer sites.
- and then i send them an email with a link to the popular submission

they typically email you back all excited because you drove 70,000 visitors to their sites in a day.

you take it from there...
