He has set up a webring of <widget> forum members who all have each other's links on their pages. I thought this kind of activity was risky, but he claims that if you are up front with it, everything is fine.
So if I set up a link club with forum members and called it "Friends of the forum name...look at their latest <widget> here:"
Would this work or are we heading for a ban?

I don't think it could hurt, as long as you kept the interlinking strictly on-topic, non-spammy, non-excessive and part of a DIVERSE profile.
However, you might also find, at some random point in the future, that all that interlinked goodness just disappears overnight. You may feel 'penalised' when in fact you are just back where you would have been without the interlinked boost.
