I came across a 'competitor' in a different city who is ranking at the top of google at present in his home town. His homepage is very spammy with every seo trick. After doing some checking up through his links, he participates in a <widget> forum offering all sorts of seo advice.

He has set up a webring of <widget> forum members who all have each other's links on their pages. I thought this kind of activity was risky, but he claims that if you are up front with it, everything is fine.

So if I set up a link club with forum members and called it "Friends of the forum name...look at their latest <widget> here:"

Would this work or are we heading for a ban?

Well, they ARE relevant links. And the fact is that in any niche, you will find community interlinking.

I don't think it could hurt, as long as you kept the interlinking strictly on-topic, non-spammy, non-excessive and part of a DIVERSE profile.

However, you might also find, at some random point in the future, that all that interlinked goodness just disappears overnight. You may feel 'penalised' when in fact you are just back where you would have been without the interlinked boost.

It's a link scheme designed to help you rank better. May work but it won't pass a hand check. Make decisions accordingly.

hand check:

Using both hands, human types URL into browser address bar, puts right hand on mouse, clicks left mouse button, examines website, sees link farm, moves hand to penalty box and pushes button (-30, -40, -50, -60 or whatever number is the latest penalty flavor of the month).
