However I thought to myself that if I could build the websites and get a .edu TLD for each then link each website back to my main website then it would be great. Firstly I would do this free if the .edu links would make sense.
Anyone have any thoughts or has tried this strategy?
IF .edu links might convey any above average advantage, that would have its roots in the fact that university sites usually have above-average editorial quality control, especially in the sections that might have serious Page Rank. Learn to think in terms of "links from trustworthy sources" rather than any specific .tld.

My friend is a teacher that teaches music at about 12 different schools for Primary education.
.edu domains are for postsecondary schools (or museums) that are accredited by a recognized accrediting body.
My thoughts - take the amount of time spent on building these sites multiplied by your hourly rate to see how much these links are really "costing" you.
