Hello, does anyone think this method is worth it. My friend is a teacher that teaches music at about 12 different schools for Primary education. He knows that I am a webmaster and said that he thinks that he can get these schools to agree to me building their websites for a small fee.

However I thought to myself that if I could build the websites and get a .edu TLD for each then link each website back to my main website then it would be great. Firstly I would do this free if the .edu links would make sense.

Anyone have any thoughts or has tried this strategy?

That idea would take a lot of work for uncertain benefit. You'd have to get a lot more than just a few .edu links for the sites you built to have any serious value to spill over to your own site.

IF .edu links might convey any above average advantage, that would have its roots in the fact that university sites usually have above-average editorial quality control, especially in the sections that might have serious Page Rank. Learn to think in terms of "links from trustworthy sources" rather than any specific .tld.

From the 'link' point of view, I would think it would only be worth it if you are going to have an easier time building links for the schools than for your site.
The value of a .edu isn't a default, it comes from the site on the domain being seen as valuable and thus gaining links more easily.
(but, frankly, if your own site is that unlinkable then eventually they will remove your link, eg they decide that Tommy's Dad shouls be the new webmaster, and then all your work will bring you no benefit)

IMHO YMMV

.edu domains are for postsecondary schools (or museums) that are accredited by a recognized accrediting body.

My thoughts - take the amount of time spent on building these sites multiplied by your hourly rate to see how much these links are really "costing" you.
