What are some of the rules you use when building low value (pr 1-5) links ?

Anything to add or rebutt from my list below:
Each link must be:

1) on theme in some way
2) from a different IP addresses
3) cached by Google
4) in indexed neighbourhoods

Don't be too quick to dismiss a link from a page that's not cached by Google. Some sites block the cache by choice.

>>>in indexed neighbourhoods

If it's free then I don't care, as long as everything else looks fine.

Here are some things important to me:
It's important that the site does not link out to sites that are SEO related. This includes SEO forums, link building software, link building clubs, article directories, and paid link networks of any kind.

The site's backlinks must not contain article directories.

The site's backlinks must not contain large amounts of directories.

Major backlinks to the site, the most important ones, must not be from the site owner's network.

The site must not be a part of a link selling network. If you can eyeball it and determine it, then so can the search engines.

The site must not discuss PageRank in it's advertising section.

The site must not discuss PageRank™ in it's advertising section.

Heh! And here I thought I was the only one who promoted that.

I'll tell ya, there are quite a few clueless types when it comes to this. ;)

Some sites block the cache by choice.

We use NoArchive judiciously now on all websites. That cache is an open can of worms if you ask me.

What is an "indexed neighborhood"?

I also like to limit the number of OBL per page, otherwise we are in SPAM territory.

Also, when you have 50+ OBL from a Pr1, whats the use...

Im trying to get a checklist of together for non-contextual pr1-5s. Someone can then spot check the work using this list

jaffstarr, would you set a limit of 50 OBLs in this checklist? if not then how many? max 10x the pr of the link ?

a) Theme Related Links
b) Links from Google Cached Page
c) Links from unique C class IP
d) No FFA (Free For All) Links

?: Does Page Rank still adds value?

The site's backlinks must not contain article directories.

The site's backlinks must not contain large amounts of directories.

Martinibuster, are you also basically saying that we shouldn't engage in submissions to article directories? Could you clarify that?

Thanks for asking that. No. I'm not discouraging article directory submissions, nor should that be construed as a comment on whether it works or not. My comment was not about the efficacy of site directories or article directories. I'm only stating my personal preference for avoiding sites with backlinks that may be seen as SEO related, detected either by algo or hand check. It goes back to looking natural.

There are many ways of getting things done.

2) from a different IP addresses

Is this really that much of a problem?

Two sites: widgetsinfo and widgetkennels

Widgetsinfo is a big site with lots of info on widgets, whilst widgetkennels is small and has info on widgetkennels for blue widgets, red widgets....

Widgetkennels has info pages on kennels and it states that the kennel info is powered by widgetsinfo? There is a link on each of the kennel pages pointing back to widgetsinfo...

There is the suggestion that this is bad if both sites are on the same IP but what if the intention here is not to over SEO but to just allow real visitors to find a path to widgetsinfo?

Is it best to remove the link and just have the text 'powered by widgetsinc', keep the links but have nofollow, or move the kennels site to another hoster?

As I say the method is not dark grey hat, but to just allow visitors who may be more interested in widgetkennels to find a clear path to widgetsinfo.

No footer links
Throw in a few URL links to mix it up as well as a mixture of anchor texts

i am; there are a lot of webmasters and bloggers that will allow you to write content on their site linking back to yours with a lot more link juice and traffic driven through those links.

build relationships with web writers in your vertical; help them and they'll help you.

I never got much traffic rom low pr backlinking. Higher pr, even if not niche related works well.

link development for itself or for search?
In relation to search...
trying to work out search engines..that way lies madness!
Heh, if search engine algorithms are like a pack of cards that can be shuffled and added to, why couldn't sites that offer links to other sites be promoted for a day or so...backlinks in reverse! That's generous and could be one of the cards...?So...
do what you love and you won't work a day in your life!
