Best to have links to index page or internal ones?

Let's say you have a site on widgets, with a page on red widgets, a page on blue, one on green, etc.

Several decent websites want to link to you.

From an SEO point, would you be better off if all the sites linked to your index page (which of course has links to the red, blue, green etc internal pages) so you build up the total links to that one page? Or would it be better if 1 site links to the red widget page, one to the blue, one to the green, etc?

Either is good, but I think deep links have an advntage. If you have a page on red widgets and find aa site about red widgets, it would certainly be best to try and get a deep link to you red widgets page. It is more on toopic, and the link will be more relevant heading t an ontopic page as opposed to a semi on topic index page.

At the end of the day all inbound links are good, but on topic links are better. Deep links are even better especialy if they are topical.

Shoot for a 60/40 split so you can then link within your internal pages for an extra boost.
