We have a quality blog and we're looking to network with other blogs, but want the comments we leave to count as links, are there any tools out there to search for blogs that don't have nofollow tags?

Looking around for "dofollow" by itself or combined search terms should give you somewhat of a start.

How long does it take to give it a shot? Here, how 'bout [dofollow blogs]?

Ouch. *whince*

Be aware that live dofollow blogs are stringent on not letting crap through. Attempting to spam them with half-baked comments is a waste of your time.

I've had comments posted on dofollow blogs, but I write 500 word articles for comments :).

I see some people keep lists of them, but no automated searches that I've found. And yes, we plan legitimate posts.

I wonder if Google ever searched for [dofollow blogs]?

I wonder what they thought about them?

I wonder if the thought 'link farm' ever crossed their minds?

I think we should be told! ;)

I think most people running active dofollow blogs are doing so either as a marketing method (to generate good comments) or as a political statement. The dofollow blogs I've seen aren't any type of link farm. Most of these sites are heavily monitored, so the dofollow is valid. In fact, the idea that people don't monitor their blogs and thus we need nofollow tags is really a problem caused by delinquent blog owners.

I have a dofollow blog and it's a political statement :).

I doubt Google ever has a problem with a well moderated blog / forum; but I suspect that there are delinquent blog owners who dofollow, too. And that might make it more difficult for Google to separate the sheep from the goats, if you know what I mean.

I don't think the need for 'nofollow' is 'an idea' - I think it's a serious necessity, and will continue to be until blog spam ceases, which is an unlikely proposition in my lifetime or yours. Spammers don't bother to check if a site is moderated, nor if it has nofollow.

Each and every defence possible is the only hope we have. Gimme more!

Well, I wasn't going to spell that out here :).

What you're suggesting though, is that somehow Google is going to use the presence or lack of the nofollow tag to affect the search results. That's actually part of the reason I don't like to use it. I want to be in the camp with folks that don't use nofollow.

Aye, and there's the rub.

Google takes nofollow very seriously, and while I have no information at all, I'd be very surprised indeed if the algo ignored nofollow presence (or lack), if certain other flags waved - such as forums and blogs.

I'm sure I've read in these forums the suggestion that 'compliant' blog / guestbook / forum services were recognised - and why not?

You need to be careful whose company you keep; their reasons to there may not coincide with yours.

But I could be totally wrong, and I've never seen any hard evidence either way. ;)

Like Quadrille, I have zero evidence. However, if I were Google, I would definately consider the blog that bothered to keep itself well-policed as 'better' than one that didn't.

And obviously delinquant blogs that dofollow, well they get penalised anyway due to the spam.

Of course, we're off topic, but hey-ho
