Need to change the inbound link and keywords in my widget link. Penalty?

We have a widget with 10's of thousands of user implementations. We are about to change the inbound link and href keywords in the title tag and anchor text of the widget. My concern is that the search engine spiders will flag this mass update as link spam/scam. Is this a valid concern?

To clarify, this is the outbound link from the widget we serve linking back to our site. I'm concerned if we change that link, and all 10's of thousands of inbound links, essentially at the same time, their destinations urls and the keyword href title tag we have associated with it will trigger a link spam flag.

If you can alter the inbound link of the gadget on the websites of others, that means these links are within the gadget, so your users are probably embedding the gadget with Javascript, Flash, or some other way, right? As such, the links to your site are not within the code of the user pages, so I would expect that search engines do not even see or pay attention to those links, or, at least, not credit your for them. On the other hand, some search engines do, to some extent, read Flash and Javascript. Personally, however, I doubt you would see a negative search-related effect, mainly because you are hosting the gadget yourself. It's an interesting question, and there may be other factors relevant here that I am unaware of, so I'm curious to see what other people think.
