I've been going back and checking links in a few places and noticed something interesting. All the base level techniques that I did a few years ago - quality directory submission, checking backlinks of competitors, that kind of stuff - is all new again. If it's been a few years since you've done this foundation level of link building it's worth going back and having another look. I'm finding 'new' sites that I haven't targetted for backlinks before.

One new thing that I stumbled on again - but I'm pretty sure was a technique from 5 years ago but I haven't seen mentioned in quite a while is looking for social bookmarking sites.

Mining social bookmarking sites is pretty easy. You just Google:
widgets site:socialbookmarkingsite.com

that'll give you lists of pages on their site where widgets are mentioned and bookmarked. And that gives you entire lists of sites from people actively interested in widgets. You can approach the people who are bookmarking the site, you can use their bookmark list as a source for links, and you can use the backlinks to the sites in their list.

If it's not something you've looked at in a while, or at all, it's another great place to get hundreds/thousands of relevant sites to start sifting through.
