I got a client with new site < 6 months old with 715 links of which
100 + from a industry related forum
200 + from one blog (blog comment spam)
200 + from other blogs (blog comment spam)
maybe 20 normal links
i have a couple of questions regarding this problem
1. The site is new , would it be better to get a new domain ?
2. how is the best method to address blog comment spam ?
3. How does this affect the rankings ?
Check all outgoing links to be sure a bad neighborhood has not been joined.
Blog and forum spam rarely does any harm or any good; they've wasted time and money, but that's almost certainly the extent of the damage.
But - anyone silly enough to be using those techniques is likely using other silly tricks, too. Keep looking :)
Most of my stuff has quite a bit of age, so other than occasionally helping out some friends, I don't have the experience that others here have launching new stuff.
...just wanted to try to make a point that those blog backlinks may NOT be what caused your site to decline.
