I have the following as anchor text in a new site :

red and blue widgets

I am aiming for the term : red widgets
and the term: blue Widgets

Would this work or have I been a bit ambitious ?

bottom line depends how competitive the term is and how many sites are just hitting red widgets alone and blue widgets - if its not a competitive term then you maybe ok

PPC : - pretty heavy competition
Search : I counted 23 competitors in za
about 25- 30 in uk
same for .com

Its not a heavily competitive term however many people compete for other terms and this is a by product .

Im just focussing on this term which would give me maybe 5 direct competitors.

with only 5 sites I'd say you had a safe bet with hitting both terms in the anchor

I would have to disagree.

I don't think "red widgets" for example would help SERP for the term "widgets". Target separately. Anyone disagree? I am talking from personal experience..
