Are "related links" pages really that useful?

So, the website i'm working on has been around for about 8 years. We're a leader in our industry and I believe we have probably about 50% of the total market share, although I can't seem to get anything specific because companies like Hitwise simply don't have enough info on our industry and thus they can't justify selling us a 15K service if we can't utilize it.

Our Related Links page is pretty robust and well on target with a healthy mix of links to authority informational sites, the few industry blogs out there, links to companies that offer related products, and even competitors whose pages are related as far as search engines go, but companies we believe can't really compete. Even if customers do go there, they come back and buy from us.

I'm just sick and tired of "related links" pages, you know? Do they really even help that much? I've been thinking of different ways i can disseminate these "important" links throughout the site to get more value out of them for the sites we're pointing to. Once i'm able to show them a higher number of referrals from our site, i could then use that to leverage better position on THEIR sites.

What is the best way to go about this? Virtually every website i see has a related links page, and if they're anything like our related links page, nobody visits the page. Doesn't that sort of make those links useless? I could have all the inbound links in the world from relevant sites but if those links live on a page that doesn't get traffic, then what's the point? Just look at blogs for example. Links are spread out throughout the body of content, surrounded by a wealth of related text. This seems to make blogs much more useful, and those blogs get spidered more.

Who thinks the related links page will be around much longer in the way it currently is? When are other sites going to smarten up and start putting those links in better positions, so they can get more out of their partners? If link building is so important, and most companies seem to just use reciprocal links, why is the related links page such a stagnant animal?

I just received a link from a major site like the BBC/NYTimes. The link was at the end of an article as a site to visit for more info on the topic. Links like those are helpful and people do use them. In fact, I've used them successfully for sending visitors to affiliate sites. Great clickthrough rates.
