Is it alright if you stick with relevent content

We are finding it more and more difficult to get relevent links, and our considering going with text links ads.

Is all the bad press on text link ads due to people getting greedy and trying to manipulate page rank, instead of concentrating on traffic and leads.

Our purpose for going with text link ads is to get more customers from related but not direct competitors sites.

If we get a little PR and a boost in the rankings, that is just the icing on the cake, and not the primary purpose.

I signed up for one of the text link ads companies and browsed their inventory, and was surprized that they had hundreds on links for what I consider a small niche.

However I am still leary, about being punished by Google.

Most of the talk on text based ads, is from 2004-2006, so im interested in what is happening in the present.

Any thoughts on the matter ?

Buy text links for traffic only and you won’t be disappointed if Google drops the PR of the page linking to you or if the webmaster decides to nofollow your links.

Basics

A site's strength is determined by the weight of the inbound links to it.

A site's outbound link value is determined by how many outbound links it has.

Beyond Basics.
Each page within a site has it's own individual strength which is determined by internal and external linkage.

Each page's outbound strength is determined by it's strength and the amount of outbounds.

Relevance is a larger factor in direct traffic than positioning to target pages unless anchors are orphans without supporting text.
