Don't like to sound like a dummy but how do I check my logfiles or know if they are public or not? I have a very hands off approach to my site.

Also, is there any way my site can be damaged in google by links from other sites over which I have no control? I am considering hiring someone to build links for me but am questioning the source and quality. The site is already well established and popular.

If you can help I would be grateful if you can answer these questions.

Cheers!

In general, no.

But if you do a lot of link swapping, buying or selling links, or join link exchange 'schemes', then there's a medium (and rising) risk to your site.

Reciprocal links with non-related sites of dubious quality is a very high risk activity.

So incoming link are safe - unless you choose to make it otherwise :)
