Hey guys I have a pretty simple question. If I purchase a domain name related to my niche that is listed on the yahoo directory and do a 301 redirect to my actual site, will it increase my "trust" in the search engines? I can't really afford purchasing a yahoo listing.
thanks! :)

Why 301 it? I'm going to assume that Y! occasionally spiders its directory to suss out and delete any redirected sites, so think a 301 would be a waste of time. But buying and developing it to support your current site, if correctly done, ain't a bad idea at all.

You can't afford not to, either. ;) If your site is good enough to be approved, it's a good idea to avoid shortcuts and save up and do it right.

MBuster, so you think that it's worth paying the 299$ to Yahoo per year or should I find better directories for the money? You seem to know your links bigtime so I'm definitely willing to listen to any advice that you may have!
thanks
Al

There are only three general directories worth submitting to, imo, and Yahoo is one of them. Yahoo is one of the directories that people turn to when they want ideas for sites to link to, and it wouldn't surprise me if a DMOZ editor may look there for sites to include as well. It's a sign of quality to other webmasters and can lead to more links.

Whether it helps you rank better or not, you have to keep it in perspective. One can of spinach won't turn you into a he-man like Popeye, and one Yahoo link isn't going to turn your site into a ranking machine. There are many other factors involved to making your site rank, and a quality link is but one of many.

martinibuster,

I would assume DMOZ is the 2nd of the three you consider worth submitting to. What is the 3rd one? Just curious.
