Backlinks for urls counted as backlinks of the final page

Is this a known thing that Google/Yahoo consider backlinks for a page that redirects to another page as backlinks to the final pages? Ie:

www.example.com has got a backlink from www.example.net

example.com has got a backlink from www.example.org

example.com actually redirects to www.example.com

This leads to www.example.com having 2 backlinks listed as its own backlinks:
1) www.example.net
2) example.com
3) www.example.org

Is this something that everyone has known for certain for a long time?

Am I write thinking that noone knows for sure about this or this is just such an obvious thing that everyone knows that I should not have even asked?!?! :(
