Has anybody tried requesting for links by fax or snail mails? Would people give it more weight, and may be link to you?

Perhaps nobody owns a fax machine here :)

I think if you spammed my fax machine, I'd fire up the old war dialer and set the redial time to 0 and the call count to 9999. And leave it like that for a week...

I can't imagine someone being more receptive to fax or snail mail spam than they are to email spam. Fax and snail mail spam would feel more intrusive.

digitalghost, what is the difference between "contacting a person" and "spamming the same person".

:) Thanks for the fax spam protection tip, may be we need to find a way to do it for emails. ;)

>>what is the difference between "contacting a person" and "spamming the same person".

It's the 'unsolicited' bit that makes it spam. I believe for faxes, (except in California) that you may be okay as long as you have a prior business relationship with the target.

I don't think this can be classified as spam.

If you have exchanged links before, how did you do it? Either you have contacted the person or he/she has done it. You might have done it over the email, but just wanted to see requesting it via fax would make a difference in the person accepting the request quicker than he does over the email.

I don't think this can be classified as spam.

Give it a try. Let us know the outcome.

Fax Machine?

Might as well do it now while you can. It won't be long before those things find their way into the history books too with all the other "old technology".

Well, check the laws, and if it's legal, go for it. Report back and let us know how it went. I'm still pretty sure that faxes are considered junk/spam faxes unless you have a prior business relationship though.

The Federal law passed in 1991 known as the Telephone Consumer Protection Act makes it illegal to send any material transmitted via facsimile that advertises the commercial availability or quality of any property, goods, or services which is transmitted to any person without that person's prior express invitation or permission. If the fax was deliberately sent to you, federal law entitles you to recover a minimum of $500 and, depending the judge's discretion, up to $1,500 for each such fax that you receive.

For me a fax would definitely not be appreciated.

A snail mail note might have a better chance of survival, but not much. I actually get some snail mail requests, but unless they follow up with an email, they're out of luck.

I suspect some use the snail mail simply as a way of opening the door for the email, which is fine with me most of the time.

As of July 9, 2005, the new junk fax exemptions, in many ways, protect companies that send unsolicited faxes (except in the state of California). The new exemption to the established law protects companies that have "established a business relationship" with the recipient. However, if your company intends to launch a fax marketing campaign, consult the law in its entirety to discover all details and stipulations guiding unsolicited fax advertising.

digitalghost, thanks for pointing that out.

Give it a try. Let us know the outcome.

pageoneresults, not that I want to immediately start doing it, but I wanted to get a few more alternatives, perhaps some people are already doing and haven't been discussed a lot here, perhaps something less frequently done.

When I initially thought of the fax because the site I am building right now, has got nothing much to do with small businesses, and is restricted to a certain region. Sending an email to the webmaster for link exchange (I understand the issue of spam comes here) I think won't produce much as this, again in my opinion, needs to be decided by the marketing people in those companies.

Perhaps, non-techy people would appreciate snail mails and fax sent to them than having just one more email in their inbox. It is a very ambitious thing I am trying to achieve, if I don't come out successful, I might have a few vital lessons to learn.

Maybe pick up the phone and call them? Takes a whole 1-5 minutes.

And, if you really want to get creative, go get some "high perceived value" pens made up that read...

"Hello, I found your website while searching Google... Link to www.example.com"

Hand them out every chance you get. Leave them on counters, at restaurants. Put them under windshield wipers, etc. ;)

pageoneresults has got a point - sometimes the human contact is worth it, lifting the phone and connecting with someone can cut the difference from email [ and the good old , very old fax .... and telegraph machine ]. What about a hand written letter .... don't get those any more.

Better still, jump in the car and see them if the link is so important. Good sales and service folks never die, even on the internet :)
