Page rank has nothing to do with traffic ranking.
so i am plan to exchange links with others

It is not a bad idea, but it will be great if you can get some oneway links. It is highly valuable.

go to DMOZ and look up your category. all the sites that come up will have passed through their editors so they'll probably be alright to swap links with.

but whether they do or not.. well that is another matter

google "link exchange directory" or "link partner directory". remember to only consider link exchange with quality sites relevant to your own. Also keep your volume low/natural (dont link up with hundreds of sites overnight).

Not necessarily. It might have been a good site, once, while it passed to editors review, but got into some link schemes that ruined it and made it worthless.

May a different approach be suggested?

  • Get a list of keywords that would be related to your topic. A fully related topic, not "Shopping" or "Computers" (example).
  • Once you have 30 keywords, get another 60 related keywords to those in your list by using such services as wordtracker, overture etc.
  • Go to Google (not dmoz directory) and enter your keywords. Visit the sites that are show up in top (30). Since they show up on top, it would indicate they're doing fine and are not penalized.

From 100 link suggestions, you might end up with less than 10. Therefore, the larger your [keywords] list, the better.
