Google "Reciprocal" Link "Exchange"

Question on the guideline wording

There's a thread here [webmasterworld.com] about Google's new "Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging" guidelines.

Can anyone define the difference between Reciprocal links and Link Exchanging?

Reciprocal is probably 2-way link, and link exchanges are N-way (ie 3-way).

Link Exchange ("Reciprocal Link Exchange") is the practice of exchanging links with other websites. The simplest way of doing it is to email another website owner and ask to do a link exchange. You place their link on your site, usually on a links page and the other site in return will place a link back to you. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_exchange)

Exchanging and reciprocal mean the same thing. The word to look for, for what to avoid is excessive.

I'll disagree with Marcia, a reciprocal link COULD be coincidental, an exchanged one not :-)
