I have seen people linking from the footer with three different link texts to same page, the home page.
Does it make (google-)sense to link in that way?

I've seen it.
It may affect things, though how many other links are on the page...
Heard a rumor that footer links no work so hot no more...
though, I think yout thinking about thinking too much

It seems to be hard to get enough back links. So, this guy just linked with tree different keywords from one page to another.
Does this make sense?
Will google count ALL of these links?
Or will google say: this is spam?
Or are footer links worthless anyway?

What value do the links have for the visitor? There is no point in cluttering the site with "features" designed for SEO if it serves no useful purpose when the visitor arrives.

I've noticed this trend as well, it's quite risky particularly in footers, short term gain long term pain IMO....
