I'm an online retailer and I'm wondering if I can use social bookmarking to promote my site. Are retailers doing that with any success?

Social bookmarking and networking can be a good way to spread your brand, but one of the main points behind the "social" aspect is communication. To really see the benefits of bookmarking sites etc, you really need to build up a community of sorts so that people can see the links you've been bookmarking.
Similarly, having a myspace website is not really any good if you have no friends on the network to look at it.
Hope this helps.

Sums it up nicely I guess. But even without the power of a community a couple of backlinks might actually be helpful.

Yes - but don't just digg your site for the hell of it. Take some time, create some creative and compelling content directly related to your products - humor works great .... then launch it and promote that piece of content, and not simply the main page of your site, on the social sites. You've heard build it and they will come... make them laugh or teach them to do something and they will bookmark. As with the first - a little nudging and promotion so they know it is there doesn't hurt.
