we are #1 in Australia and have been approached by the #1 company in our field in the US to exchange links. Is there any advantage to us in doing this?

But if you have no WWW ambitions, it probably won't hurt.

I imagine it would probably help, unless, as quadrille says, you harbour global ambitions. They send the antipodean traffic your way, and you send your relevant visitors to them.

And if you are both #1 you are doing a service to your visitors and using linking in a way which the search engines proclaim that they like it to be used...
