What is your success rate in link building?

I've submitted my links to 21 directories and have asked for links from anchor text from about 7 sites. So that makes it about 28 attempts.

So far, I've only obtained 3 links from directories. So that makes my success rate between 10% to 11%. Is this rate normal?

My success rate varies depending on the site and topic. I get one link for every two or three requests I make for one of my sites. My other sites have a lower success rate. Some are much lower.

It can be difficult to gauge the success rate due to the fact that a response is sometimes considerably delayed. I've acquired links from requests I sent more than a year ago in some cases.

Based on what I've read, your success rate is pretty normal.

Link building is a long , an never ending process,

20 directories an 7 sites, pah, thats just one hour of work :)

the more you do it, the better you're success rate will become, if you stick with it

Many of those link requests may be processed up to 4 months from now, depending on how much the other side has to do, an if they don't like your approach or you site, then they might reject your request.

I think you might want to set a target after you've been doing it a bit longer,

I merely hope that I always get more acceptances than rejections, which I do, but I avoid revisiting sites where i've been rejected, they merely hit the delete key :)

I feel it is getting more and more difficult to get good links. Not counting directories, my success rate even with personal e-mails and highly on-topic sites is below 5%.

10 % is a great success!

I have now a different approach. I highly select the links and sometimes I contact the targeted sites by regular mail or by phone.

I think it's a better approach than using emails.

It takes more times but you get a lot more.....

Good, trusted sites receive too many emails requesting links exchange: it's better to give proof that you are a reliable person suggesting an excellent sites.

In these days you can get free links only if you have excellent content, otherwise you collect only very low quality links.....

How does your regular mail approach work? What are your closing rates? Sounds like a great idea.

Is it better or worse than calling?

How about not just sending the people 1 email, but sending them an e-mail talking about interesting stuff in your industry? I'm new so Ive never used that for link building, but I usually do get to know people and most answer me when I ask them something about their sites (or on the topic), that I'm interested in.

EDIT: I mean building real relationships with them...having conversations on a topic within the niche..
