How can I find potential link exchanges?

I'm looking at the possiblity of creating a website that addresses a specific medical disease. What's the best way to go about finding link exchanges? Most of the websites I've seen that address this disease don't seem to have a "links" page.

Any suggestions?

Following up...I was looking through the posts in the library and came across a thread that provided a list of "directories" that were recommended as a first step in link development. This list was compiled back in 2003. Does anyone have any updates or suggestions that could be added to this list?

Directories are only a start.

Next step is to check backlinks of sites currently ranking. type in different combinations of your preferred search terms and check the rankings, then check the backlinks of those sites.

If the site's unique enough, I'd skip the reciprocal thing and just ask for a one way link.

Then you can start doing searches like 'your medical term' + directory, or 'your medical term' + blog, and so on, to find even more sites to approach.

Then do the same thing on related medical conditions or terms.
