Acceptable rate for building links

I am trying to figure out what is an acceptable rate of link building. There are different views which exist on the subject. Some say 30 per month and anything beyond is considered SPAM. However I am confused, as there are some popular websites which would incorporate more than 1000 links. Is existing PR, age of the website also considered?

Any educated guesses on the subject?

Hi

If you need natural ranking for your website then only exchange 25 to 30 good one way links or 5 Targeted links.

Targeted links is very very important.

An experienced SEO knows the factors involved with this complex question:

Rate of previous link building, if any
Variance of anchors used in the building
Quality of sites linking, and type of link (one way, recip)
Age of site
Ranking of website previous to linkbuilding

Any number of these factors (and more I am sure) influence the rate at which you can build or bait for links.

Generally sites that have more page, better rankings and age can withstand faster building, but again, this is NOT always the case.
