I have always been puzzled by how to get links for a strictly ecommerce site selling small widgets.

The design does not allow for much text! Adwords is way to expensive for us!

Average item selling for $15

How to get links?

Ask. Keep it simple...

"Hi (name);

I'd appreciate it if you would consider linking to my (type of website) at [etc....] Maybe add 1 or 2 SHORT sentences about your website and what you do.

Thanks,

Your Name
Your phone number.

But before you ask, take a look at your site. Would YOU link to it if it belonged to someone else and they asked you for a free link?

I'd guess that choosing who to send the request to is a big part of getting a link.

Why don't you add quality articles or guides relating to the products you sell? You can then ask other sites to link to those articles (because they will add value to the other sites users).

Paid posting services.
Directory submissions.
Advertise on websites that you might share an audience with.

Look for web pages that talk about whatever widgets you sell, and offer money (or a free widget) for a link within those pages.

search example:
"your widgets" site:.edu
"your widgets" site:.org
etc.

Unfortunately nowadays you have to pay for links.
Please, spare me the "Create content and they will link to you" spiel.

Hi,
One of the best source to get good quality links are from Forum. Be genuinely active on relevant forums.

Besides launch a blog on your website and this will open thousand ways to get quality links such as from people tagging your posts or your RSS feed etc.

Hope this helps.
