was your site in anything like an digital automated link exchange network - Matt Cutts

What types of digital networks are off limits?
Basically, in link matchmaker programs, you join and have the opportunity to hook up with thousands of other sites looking for a reciprocal link.
I'm not sure Google is automatically penalizing sites who use these networks, BUT, I don't think Google would approve of any site accumulating links with that method either.
So there is a definite risk factor made riskier if Google should develop the ability to detect and discount such networks. I personally believe that if they can't do it already, they will.
Just because Matt raises his eyebrow doesn't mean Google has the ability to spot and discount a particular method. They might, though. What is clear is that the raised eyebrow is a good signal that the technique is on their radar, eh?
My guess is that "automated link networks" really excludes sites that are relatively legit and is more focused on some "spammy" activity.
I have no clue who they are though.
