Hi and welcome to webmasterworld [webmasterworld.com]. You can't post the link here, but I'm sure you'll get varying opinions to your questions. You can start off by getting listings in top quality directories, doing a press release campaign as well as media intros in your industry and by finding good sites to advertise on - to name a few...

Thanks sugarrae,

Going to start with directories, although I wanted to get some good quality links form other sites as well as doing some PR, I know people will link if site is good and has content worth linking to but wanted to try and contact a few sites and ask for links or link exchanges - easier if my site was more established

Thanks again
Stuart

At the start your link building campaign can be very slow to progress. It does take time to get going.

What I tend to do is search for suitable sites that I would want to have link to me. I thn store all of this in an excel spreadsheet. I then have a column for email sent with a "1" in it to indicate I have sent a link request email. I then have columns for email reply received and accepted, again I just use the number "1" on these columns. This allows me to e a bit more thorough by following up on refusals, and also knowing what sites are worth emailing in the future.

When I send a link email each email is specific to the recipient. For example I specify what page I believe the site link would be appropriate on. I also explain a little bit about my site and hope they are willing to link to me.

It has got a lot harder in recent times to get links, but if you stick at it it can be rewarding.

Mack.

Look up an appropriate category on DMOZ and get suggestions for partners there. Check similar sites and who links to them - they might be very good partners, too.
