Blog- I link to your main site from my blog, you link to my main site from your blog. Means you get more than a page of links and some text surrounding your link. I am working big time on this one with some interlinking of the blogs too for more benefit for all. Of course I will be top of the pile though :)
Link script on site to display 10 links per page as "advertising". Means you get links on proper pages instead of links pages. Bad side can make your site like alinks scheme and can send customers elsewhere.
3rd party blogs for the purpose of links (replacing the good ol' links directory).
Mutual content swap on sites ( ohh lots of effort, I prefer a few lines on a blog for the same backlink effect)
Care to add anything folks of what can replace links pages as a more automated way of link building?
If rollyo's ever take off (no relation to roxyyo!) that would be a neat way of exchanging sites. By putting a "search these sites" box on your own site, you not only give the user functionality to search sites that you are 'voting' for by adding them to your searchroll, I believe it may also count as a backlink. (One of the sites I manage showed a rollyo backlink on one of my last checks).
Not sure how the SE's handle/value this type of link, but if you don't know what I'm talking about...a searchroll is a list of sites that you can search from--like creating a custom search engine. For example, I could collect sites related to "widget info" and create a rollyo on them, call it "Widget Info" and let my users search for info they can't find on my site or whatever as an alternative to "search this site + search Google" searchboxes.
You could potentially have a whole directory of categorized Rollyos that would help the user decide which link they want to go to. Rather than seeing a big list of "widget related sites" on a link page one could just search for "blue widget Wisconsin" and pick the most relevant result.
