On what basis does Google show backlinks?

Hi ,

I was just wondering, how does this "link:www.mywebsite.com" works on Google?
As per my knowledge, it shows all the inbound links for the particular site(in numbers) and it'll show me all the related links of the respective websites.

I encountered a website where in it showed 1 of about 18 links(on Google) in total and just displayed one inbound link.

Google has not mentioned it anywhere on what basis it accepts or rather shows the results when you type in “link:www.mywebsite.com”, As per the backlinks searched on one of the free baclink checker), it showed 20 results as compared to 18 when I searched for the links on Google. However, only one link was displayed on Google.
There can be various factors why Google is not displaying the rest of the links,

1. The Link(website) has not been cached
2. The Link was cached several months back
3. Duplicate IP
4. Not a theme based link
5. Either the website has been penalized or banned

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks and regards
D

never use google's link operator. IMO its worthless.

Use yahoo's. Its updated frequently and is very accurate.

6. Google is intentionally not showing all the backlinks (they have mentioned that this "broken" backlink search is by design)

Thanks for your posts,

Hey Oddsod mentioned: "Google is intentionally not showing all the backlinks (they have mentioned that this "broken" backlink search is by design) "

Could you please explain why would they do it? I dont think google can be that rude!

Yes, it is intentional.

The main reason most believe is that it makes it harder for SEO's to use their backlink information to their advantage.

Rest assured, devilseye7130, that Google DOES in fact know about your incoming links and are taking them into account while ranking your web pages. They just aren't about to reveal them to you. It would make the process of building link campaigns way to easy and therefore negate their algos which so heavily weigh incoming links.

I agree with all the other posts here. I don't even bother with G's link check, opting instead to work with Yahoo!

Google refresh his database with backlinks periodicly(2-3 months). So , you must wait . Yahoo is refreshing his backlinks database very fast ,you can check at Yahoo.

Thanks for your thoughts...

Just out of curiosity, i was wondering to ask the same thing to google via help@google.com.. was amazed to know that they do not respond via email.. at once i was OK with it, cause the reply what they send was asking me to fill up a contact form after which they wud respond me...

NOW, once you click on their support link, it has nothing but answering all your queries..(pretty amateur querries)
That means they do not have other way to contact them.

I just wonder, how could google be so rude?

Thanks and regards

1: Please post a title that is descriptive of your discussion. "I Blink when I look at the LINK" has nothing to do with your discussion. So I changed it to the current title.

2: Google intentionally randomizes and/or limits it's search and toolbar functions so they can't be used to unravel it's algorithm or used as an SEO tool.

3: The backlink serps only show a random sample of links.

4. Discussions about Google and how Google Search functions go in the Google Search forum.
