What's the best way exit link exchange schemes?

Does it raise a flag?

I have a domain that is currently in a link-vault which I would like to remove from the program.

If I just remove my site I am concerned the quick reduction in backlinks will raise a flag.

What's the best way exit link exchange programs?
Would it be ok to quit cold turkey?

Without knowing more details about your "link vault", its tough to say but I would suggest you prune your outgoing links so that only those remain benefit your end user's experience. Don't worry about the side effects of improving your exit links. If your links are optimized for what benefits your end users, you should not suffer any negative consequences.

Broadly I agree; links that are chosen and placed by you for the direct benefit of your users are the ones that matter, and removing risky or inappropriate links can only be good news.

However; even link exchanges with dire sources may have some SEO value (until Google utterly removes, penalises or downgrades them. By removing them, you are making a tradeoff - long term safety and benefit, against possible small loss in the short term. In my view, a trade well worth making - but if your site relied heavily (or totally!) on the link farming, then the loss could be significant, in the short term.

If you have other incoming links, the worries reduce.

Compensate by exploring Quality Directories - especially in your niche or locality - and building few general links too.
