There have been many discussions about this here on webmasterworld. Try searching google using the string: reciprocal site:webmsterworld.com

Best strategy is to pretend google does not exist, even though their algoritme gives one way links a higher value today that might change tomorrow.

Also very few know what those values are, that is; how many reciprocal links equal one one-way. In any case it is much more difficult to get a permanent one-way link than to do an exchange.

The idea is that a link is a vote for the site you link to. A link is a recommendation.

With reciprocal links, there's a real possibility that the sites only link to each other to increase exposure, and not because they actually think the other site is high quality or would want to recommend it to their visitors.

The same idea applies to paid links - sites link to you because you pay them, not because they are genuinely 'voting' for your site.

Sites don't link to you unless your site is good enough and most of the time the link exchange strategies are to get the reciprocal links, one way links though good enough and more suitable for Google ranking or for that matter another search engine they are hard to get.

One way links are better than reciprocal links but reciprocal links are still good to have. Google would never remove all relivance from reciprocal links.

The more unique content you have on your site is better than anything.

Google always wants to have those sites at the top which actually deserve to be at the top.
If you will have only recip links google will come to know that you are trying to manually manuputale the lnks. What google wants is that things should stay normal and natural.

Try and exchange links with sites strictly related to your theme.

"Try and exchange links with sites strictly related to your theme."

I guess that would depend on the site. Some sites have multiple niches or themes.

One of our sites we have multiple niches in which we have things from Jewelry to Auto parts and we dont have any problems with the SE's, at least not in the 3 years the site has been up.

I guess if a site is all one theme then getting links that are the same as the site theme would be best but im not really sure if unrelated reciprocal links would hurt the site.

Reciprocal links are here to stay. Its part of the .com biz and the SE's know this so getting as many links pointing to your site would be a good thing.
